It is with sadness that the Mawsons Hut Team noted the passing of Sir
Edmund Hilary - news we received yesterday. He was the first to conquer
Everest - along with Tenzing Norgay - and in some ways this represents
one of the last great feats in exploration in the manner of the
"heroic era" - similar to Mawson and his team. A copy of Alasdair
MacGregor's book "Mawson's Huts - An Antarctic Expedition
Journal" (1998) that resides on one of the shelves in the Sørensen Hut
is signed by him. Requiescat in Pace.

Note: Sir Edmund was a previous patron of the Mawson's Huts Foundation and contributed much to the conservation work by signing many items sold to raise funds for future work. He also visited Australia several times to attend functions in support of the Foundation. He is sadly missed.

Good morning hutters.
It's been a daily pleasure to watch your progress through your ambitious work plan. The Cape seems full of surprises, or maybe it has just had a lot of bad publicity - is there really any part of Antarctica that could justify the title "this accursed land"? Well done all round, ladies and gents. We look forward to your safe return, and to hearing first-hand how you did it.

Very inspiring "sitrep's" and insights of the notoriously difficult surroundings you managed. I tried my best to get pictures to you from the inside hut of the 1950-54 Victor Greenland expedition, but unfortunately you can only see them when you are at home. Looking forward to the pictures.
